Every behaviour serves a purpose. Understanding the "why" is the first step to providing effective, compassionate support. Meet the four functions:

The behaviour fulfils an internal sensory need — it feels good or relieves discomfort, regardless of who is in the room.
The behaviour is designed to get away from something unpleasant — a loud room, a difficult task, or an unwanted interaction.
The behaviour is a way to connect or get a reaction — even negative attention is still attention.
The behaviour is aimed at getting a specific item or activity — access to a preferred object or experience.
If you misidentify the function, your response won't work. For example, if a client is throwing items to escape a noisy room, and you put them in a quiet "time out" — you've just rewarded the behaviour. They got exactly what they wanted. The goal is to become a behaviour detective.
